I am Human Ecology | Carlos Aguiar, Ph.D. candidate in Cornell University D+EA

About Carlos Aguiar

I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in Design & Human Behavior at Cornell University under the supervision of Dr. Keith Green. I have minors in Science and Technology Studies, with Dr. Trevor Pinch, and in Information Science, with Dr. Gilly Leshed. I will complete my Ph.D. in May 2020. Prior to Cornell, I earned a master of computational design at the University of Washington and a bachelor in Architecture and Urbanism at Estácio de Sá University (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

My research expertise lies at the intersection of design, computing, human behavior, and STS. More specifically, I explore the development of cyber-physical artifacts and environments, and investigate how these artificial systems can enable, foster, and assist humans' interactions, needs, and activities. My research targets applications such as smart and connected communities; aging in place; literacy; and individual and collaborative work. To iteratively design and prototype, and empirically evaluate these technologically-rich systems, I use a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods method including, but not limited to, co-design and participatory design, usability, user-experience design, and ethnography.

As an educator, I taught and assisted the teaching of classes such as Interaction Design, Human-Centered Design Methods, Design Communication, and Applied Ergonomics. My primary goal as a teacher is to inspire and guide students through their intellectual development. My ambition is to form creative, passionate, and knowledge-seeking minds that will explore, identify, and respond to challenges and opportunities in a technologically changing world.
