Fully-funded Ph.D. Position (Always Recruiting):

I invite applicants to UIUC's Informatics Doctoral Program focusing on Design, Technology, and Society.

I welcome Ph.D. students to propose their own dissertation topics. Research in DTS Lab is highly collaborative and can be developed in partnership with faculty and students from disciplines including Design, STS, Information and Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computing Engineering, Architecture, Social Science, Psychology, Linguistics, etc. UIUC provides exceptional platforms for interdisciplinary research. In DTS Lab, students will concentrate on one of these two umbrellas:

Focus one: Research focuses on human-centered design, engineering, and evaluation of interactive, cyber-physical systems across a range of scales (from products to rooms to buildings to urban spaces) that support our everyday life and well-being.

Desired qualifications: Applicants' prior degree(s) can be bachelor's or master's degree(s) from a design discipline (e.g., architecture, product design, interaction design, UX design, HCI, HRI, etc.) or an engineering discipline (EE, ME, ECE, etc.). Basic physical computing prototyping skills (e.g., Arduino-based projects) and programming (e.g., python coding) are highly welcomed.

Focus two: Research focuses on critical engagement with material culture, particularly on the interactions between humans and artifacts, through the lenses of Science and Technology Studies, Philosophy, and Theory of Design.

Desired qualifications: Applicants' prior degree(s) can be bachelor's or master's degree(s) from STS, philosophy, or any theoretical study in Design disciplines (e.g., architecture, product design, interaction design, UX design, HCI, HRI, etc.)

Applications: Prospective Ph.D. students can apply to the program through this link here.

Please email your CV, cover letter, and portfolio (or project website link) to chaa@illinois.edu. Full funding and a living stipend may be offered to qualified Ph.D. applicants.

General qualifications: Preferred applicants are individuals interested in pursuing a Ph.D. focused on the abovementioned topics. The applicant's undergraduate GPA should be 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or the 90% equivalent on other scales).

DTS Lab membership:

We are constantly looking for undergrads, master's, and Ph.D. students and Visiting Students & Scholars with design, computing, engineering, and STS background to join our interdisciplinary research teams. Please email your CV, PDF portfolio (or website link), and letter of intent to "chaa@illinois.edu" if interested.
