Current members:

Carlos Aguiar

Carlos Aguiar is an Assistant Professor in Industrial Design at the School of Art + Design and an Affiliate Faculty of Informatics at the School of Information Science, UIUC. As a founder and director of the Design, Technology, and Society Lab, Carlos leads the collaborative effort to investigate the interaction between humans and artifacts in an increasingly techological world. Carlos has a Ph.D. in Design and Human Behavior from Cornell University, an MSc in Design Computing from the University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Architecture and Urbanism from Estácio de Sá University (Brazil).

Fatemeh Zare

Fatemeh holds a Ph.D. in Architecture and has over 10 years of teaching experience. She is currently examining the link between computational design agents, designers, and the emergent design product, framed by actor-network theory. In particular, she is interested in the interaction between non-humans and humans in the design process and how this transforms the underlying design principles. She is working on the “Artifacts, Designers, Users” project.

Matt Ying

Matt is a junior undergraduate student in Industrial Design. He is interested in the evolving interplay between consumer products and technology, as well as how they were integrated together to provide a better quality of life. He hopes to explore and experiment in products that are slowly having significance in the next few generations.

Owen Harry

Owen is a junior studying industrial design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is interested in consumer electronics, competitive robotics, and manufacturing processes with skills in parametric modeling, product visualization, and rapid prototyping.

Shuoning Stone Shi

Stone is a junior student majoring in Industrial Design and New Media. He has mechanical engineer work experience in manufacturing production lines and a research background in product design. He is committed to human-centered designed artifacts for everyday life.

Cindy Su

Cindy Su is a senior undergraduate student in computer engineering. Her curiosity lies in exploring the intersection between technology and human experience, and how technology can enhance and transform our daily lives, making them more efficient, enjoyable, and accessible to all. Cindy is currently working at the “Artifacts for Children” project.

Jaemin Park

Jaemin is a junior undergraduate student pursuing dual degrees in industrial design and graphic design, with a minor in business. He is passionate about generating creative outcomes through human-centered design. He has developed his skills in design software such as Adobe Suite and is well-versed in design thinking methodologies.

Mukta Phatak

Mukta is a junior undergraduate student pursuing dual degrees in Industrial Design and Psychology. She has always been interested by the intersection of arts and technology and particularly how human interaction influences both fields. She continues to explore design thinking through user experience design and human-centered design.

Adam Slafsky

Adam is an undergraduate student in Industrial Design. Having spent his first few semesters in Materials Science and Engineering, he aims to integrate his experience in engineering with his passion for design. In the future, Adam hopes to seek higher education in an industrial design master's program. Adam is currently working on the "Artifacts for Children" project.

Anne Schmidt

Anne is an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Industrial Design with a minor in Media. She is interested in the influence of human experiences within the relationship between arts and technology. She intends to explore deeper into the field of physical experience design with the potential of seeking higher education in a master’s program.
